Science of learning, in action

Assessments are a big topic in education so we’ll narrow down the topic for this session to focus on two aspects: First, well planned assessments can offer you the support to make good decisions continuously in the learning process allowing for agile teaching. Secondly, assessments can nudging students to learning by highlighting their individual paths:

part 1: Agile Teaching

Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.
Vince Lombardi

When do you know how much students learned in your class? In a world of rare, high stakes, summative assessments you get an idea about how much students gained in your class very late into the process. It is very much like bowling in the dark, hoping to hear some pins fall. Even if you see some success, do you have a good understanding of what enabled it? Or what cause some students to fail? Was there anything that you could have done about it?

Blended learning offers unparalleled opportunities to understand more about the student in a granular way that will enable you to do what you can do best: connect – meet the students where they are.

You should be able to understand what students need most attention, before, during and after every single class, This will, in turn, enable you to review, recalibrate your process and methods constantly.

part 2: Highlighting the Path

When the path ignites a soul,
there’s no remaining in place.
Hakim Sanai

Students will benefit directly from a good assessment implementation. Retrieval practice emerged as an outright learning strategy because regular, low stakes, assessments with clear feedback allow student to map their progress often, encourages meta-cognition and helps them adjust their work, ask for more specific help.

Direct feedback from educators as well as peer feedback tend to show high impact on learning. Feedback refocuses, reframes and aligns efforts and activities with an outcome. High quality feedback takes some training and effort but studies show that it one of the more impactful activities.

More frequent, lower intensity/lower stakes assessments serve  as good point of departure for constructive conversations between students, as well as with your peers. More generally, if counterintuitively, they direct attention away from grades and towards the content matter and activities and encourage thoughtful risk-taking.
